We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Counsel within the General Counsel Organization (GCO) at American Express. The attorney will report to the Global Chief Privacy Counsel, based in the United States. This position will be responsible for leading a team of experienced lawyers to provide top-notch legal advice on applicable data protection laws, rules and regulations in the EMEA region. Additionally, this role will provide strategic advice on global data laws as we build enterprise products and platforms, develop public policy positions, and create a flexible data protection agenda of the future.

Examples of what you will do in this role:

  • Provide leadership and strategic direction to the EMEA Data Protection team;
  • Provide pragmatic advice to AXP senior management on a wide range of data protection issues, including EU GDPR, UK GDPR, marketing/advertising requirements and international data transfer;
  • Review, negotiate and draft data protection terms in vendor agreements, confidentiality agreements, privacy policies/customer disclosures, etc. ;
  • Proactively monitor and provide advice on data-related legislative and regulatory developments in the EMEA region;
  • Proactively engage and coordinate with regional attorneys in the US, Latin America and APAC to monitor regulatory trends and provide guidance from a central team perspective;
  • Support the design and delivery of continuing legal education programs on privacy issues;
  • Participate and advise on various strategic initiatives related to cutting edge privacy and data usage issues.

Required Skills :

  • Law degree (UK or EU) and admission to the bar;
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant data protection experience in a law firm and/or in-house corporate legal environment (in-house experience strongly preferred);
  • Corporate transactional experience in negotiating and drafting data provisions for a variety of complex commercial agreements and client disclosures;
  • Solid knowledge of the regulatory postures of several data protection authorities in the EU and the UK;
  • Proven track record in leading cohesive and high performing legal teams;
  • Effective communication and influencing skills, with the ability to drive projects forward in a large matrix organization;
  • Strong interpersonal and client management skills, with an innovative and pragmatic attitude to help solve new and complex problems;
  • Intellectually curious about leadership, emerging technologies and other relevant topics;
  • Willingness and flexibility to take on new responsibilities and meet new challenges as American Express and its business continue to evolve;
  • Willingness to accept international calls and travel (~10%).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Previous experience in technology, fintech and/or financial services;
  • CIPP/EU certification;
  • Experience in managing data protection issues for multinational companies; and
  • Outward oriented, with a strong privacy network in the EMEA region.
