Vicor: HIRO Deploys Next Generation of Scalable Edge Micro Data Centers


State-of-the-art computing is essential to harness the full potential of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and the Internet of Things (IoT). These technologies are infused into every corner of our lives: autonomous driving, smart buildings, robotics, supply chain management and healthcare.

What is advanced computing?

Edge computing serves as a faster relay (middle layer) for data to enable real-time critical responses across devices. Edge Computing can dramatically boost services and applications by supporting AI natively, instead of relying on AI in the cloud. The edge is where smart decisions are made about when to move compute from the edge to the cloud.

HIRO, a Dutch entrepreneurial technology company, develops innovative and reliable cutting-edge infrastructure (hardware and software) capable of delivering smart edge as a service. Working closely with PCB Design Ltd., an innovative Hungarian hardware design house, has led to the development of a robust and high performance IT and communications solution.

The result was the Edge Micro Data Center (EMDC) – a highly scalable, compact, state-of-the-art computing resource that can thrive outdoors in harsh environments. It can integrate any type and quantity of CPU, GPU, FPGA and NVMe® (Non-Volatile Memory Express) media in platforms ranging from 1.5kW shoeboxes to containerized 500kW perimeter installations. Completely solid-state and modular, these platforms require little maintenance and no energy for cooling.

Have an impact on the community

HIRO is particularly committed to supporting hospitals, processing Big Data and training AI models in privacy-preserving environments.

Hospitals need large datasets to transmit beyond their premises, to train their AI models that can help detect and cure cardiovascular disease, cancer, tumors and other complex disorders. HIRO is developing the cost-effective infrastructure that allows medical specialists to train their models with data from other hospitals, without moving or exposing the data outside of the hospital.

In addition, HIRO is working on the € 16 million BRAINE project, which includes four test bed sites with unique applications across Europe (the Netherlands, Italy and Hungary):

  • Hyper-connected smart city

  • Robotics in the Industry 4.0 factory

  • Supply chain industry 4.0

Power density is integral to a scalable and efficient platform

Very compact and efficient power conversion is achieved by designing hardware to operate from 48VCC electrical distribution, instead of 12VCC. The higher voltage reduces I2R losses through the energy distribution network (PDN). High-density, high-efficiency Vicor power modules contribute to HIRO’s solid-state, thermally-matched, compact, and energy-efficient EMDC designs.

Vicor DCM power modules provide 48VCC at 12VCC conversion. With their flexible cooling options, they deliver the world’s best volumetric power density. This flexibility lends itself to renewable energy opportunities.
