Hamilton Police Sexual Assault Support Program receives Attorney General’s Award for Victim Services

The Attorney General’s Victim Services Awards recognize the dedication and achievements of professionals, organizations, programs and volunteers who work to support victims of crime and raise awareness of the issues victims in Ontario.

In 2018, the Sexual Assault Support Program (SASP) was piloted following the Sexual Assault Community Review. The program became permanent in 2019 to improve supports for victims of sexual violence who choose to go through the reporting and investigation process. Rachel Cooper was hired as coordinator of this program in October 2020.

This program provides support, information, system navigation and access to community resources for survivors of sexual violence. A member of the Victim Services Branch meets with the survivor prior to the investigative process to provide trauma-informed care, explain the process, offer interview support, and provide awareness of resources such as counseling services.

Since 2019, more than 530 people who have suffered sexual violence have been supported.

Importantly, the Sexual Assault Support Program has also expanded to support survivors of human trafficking as well as child abuse.

The Hamilton Police Service is delighted to announce that on Thursday, March 10, 2022, our Victim Services Branch was one of 16 recipients of the 2021-2022 Attorney General’s Award for Victim Services for its program sexual assault support.
