Governor Tim Walz authorizes the National Guard to support emergency flood operations in northwest Minnesota
ST. PAUL – Following severe spring storms in northwest Minnesota, Governor Tim Walz today declared a peacetime emergency and authorized the Minnesota National Guard to provide support for flood operations emergency, including personnel, equipment and resources. Assistance is authorized by Emergency Executive Order 22-08.
“When our neighbors are in trouble, we step in to lend a hand,” Governor Walz said. “I am proud that the Minnesota National Guard has answered this call to serve. Guard support will be critical to keeping Minnesotans safe during this difficult time. »
Beginning April 23, 2022, a severe spring storm system with very heavy rain and high winds caused flash flooding in northwestern Minnesota. Flooding on the Red Lake River in Crookston closed local roads and threatened key facilities including a fire station and housing estate. Local government resources are not sufficient to deal with the threat to life and property posed by the floods.
Several counties have declared local emergencies and activated their emergency operations plans. The Polk County Sheriff and Emergency Manager asked the Minnesota National Guard to assist with emergency sandbagging, patrolling flood protection systems and operations potential evacuations.
